What is a dental fraternity?
The objectives of this Fraternity are to
maintain and advance the high standards of dentistry by instilling in
its members the spirit of fraternal cooperation; and to exert its
influence for the advancement of the dental profession in its methods of
teaching, of practice, of research, of ethics and of jurisprudence.
What are the benefits/advantages of membership?
Some of the overall general benefits/advantages of membership can be
found on the Member Benefits page. Like any
organization of which you may become a member, you get out of it what you
put into it. Of course, we hope that educational support, networking, social
interchange, and group community service and philanthropy will prove to be
positive adjuncts to your professional education and your personal life.
How much is it going to cost?
The initial pledging and initiation fee is $60. This covers your
National dues for the entire time you are in dental school. Upon graduation,
you become an alumni member and to be listed as an active alumni member your
annual dues to the National fraternity is currently $60. Presently there are
no chapter dues. The Chapter hopes to finance its operations through
fundraising. Some activities will be group financed with each member
contributing equally; however, when this occurs, it will be discussed and
voted on by the Chapter.
How much time will I have to put into the fraternity if I become a
member?
The amount of time you spend being involved in Fraternity and Chapter
activities is up to you. Certainly there are some events and activities, as
determined by the Chapter, that you will be expected to participate in. It
is hoped that the Fraternity experience will complement and enhance your
dental education and your personal life. It is hoped that you will want to
participate fully, including such things as participating in leadership,
serving on a committee, or directing a project. Chapter meetings will be
held every third week, usually at a noon hour. Special meeting, such as
Initiation, will be held at other times and could be a little longer.
Who do I contact if I want more information?
If you need additional information, contact any member of the Chapter.
In particular, contact any of the Executive Committee (listing found on the
Officer's Page). You may wish to also look at the
information found on the National
Headquarters website.
When can I join and what do I have to do to join?
At present Upsilon Nu Chapter has open recruitment. In other words, we
recruit and accept applications for membership anytime throughout the year.
In order to join, you must be a student at UNLV School of Dental Medicine
and in good academic standing. You must not be a member of any other Dental
Fraternity.
You may get a membership application from Rush Chair Breanna Raner or
from any officer. You will need to fill the application and the pledge form
out completely and submit a check for $60. Once this has been received, your
application will be presented to the Chapter at a regular Chapter meeting.
After approval by the Chapter, your forms and payment will be sent to the
National Office for approval to initiate. Once the Chapter has received the
official acceptance of your application from the National Office, the
Chapter can initiate you.
