Welcome to Upsilon Nu Chapter of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity
As the newly elected
Chapter President of the Upsilon Nu Chapter of Psi Omega here at UNLV
School of Dental Medicine, I would like to welcome you to our chapter's
web site.
I
hope that during the coming year Psi Omega continues to develop into a
dental fraternity that not only provides members with fun social events
and great ways to give back to our Las Vegas community, but also gives
members a sense of pride in UNLV and Psi Omega. We have a wonderful,
diverse group of students who will hopefully each make a positive impact
on our growing fraternity. We are trying to make Psi Omega events fun
for everyone and appealing to all members. Thank you for giving me the
opportunity to make Psi Omega even greater than it already is!

Fraternity Objectives
The objectives of this Fraternity are to maintain
and advance the high standards of dentistry by instilling in its members the
spirit of fraternal cooperation; and to exert its influence for the advancement
of the dental profession in its methods of teaching, of practice, of research,
of ethics and of jurisprudence.
History of Psi Omega
Early in the spring of 1892 William Sprigg Hamilton
of Georgia, a student at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery Class of 1894
conceived the idea of founding a dental fraternity. He imparted his views to J.
George Schmetzer, and the two planned the organization. Hamilton wrote the
original Ritual and Constitution, which were submitted and adopted on the eighth
day of June 1892 in the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the first dental
college in the world.
History of Upsilon Nu Chapter
UNLV School of Dental Medicine welcomed its first class of students in
September 2002. At first the school operated out of temporary buildings on the
main UNLV campus. In May of 2004, the school relocated to a new campus on
Charleston Avenue on the UNLV Shadow Lane Campus. UNLV School of Dental
Medicine graduated its first class of students this past May (2006). In an
effort to provide activities and opportunities for fellow students an interest
group explored the possibility of starting a chapter of one of the Dental
Fraternities. Psi Omega was selected and working with the National Office and
Executive Director, Upsilon Nu Chapter was installed on Friday, October 13,
2006, with 33 charter members. Currently the chapter has 67 members. |
